âThey arenât doing as well as the others,â I yelled across the corral to her.
âThatâs what happens when people try to shortcut shit!â
she yelled back, laughing. âYouâll have to walk them for two hours to get the same results.â
I looked at Hops and Royal, my shoulders drooping. I had indeed tried to shortcut the process, and while I technically wouldnât be losing any time in the long run, it disappointed me that I wasnât saving time either.
âGuess I should ask questions before giving things like this a shot,â I told Glendella when the llamas and I passed her on our way around the corral.
âMay save you some false hope if nothing else,â she agreed. âDid you eat lunch?â Her subject switch caught me o guard.
âDonât think so,â I answered, knowing I had not.
âWell, itâs too late now,â she replied haughtily. âYouâll have to wait until dinner. Iâd recommend not missing dinner, however, or you wonât be able to dive into tomorrow the way you have today.â She nodded at my arm, and I craned my neck to see what she was looking at.
It was my health meter. It was three-quarters empty after hauling wheat and walking llamas all day.
âI wonât miss dinner. What time is dinner, again?â I asked, laughing.
âWe are moving it to seven since we are getting up at five,â she answered.
âIâll be there,â I replied. She nodded as she walked away to return to whatever work it was she was doing.
I instantly found myself bored for the first time that day. I had over an hour left to walk the llamas, who were both going agonizingly slow compared to Frosting. So, my mind started wandering to the books and journals Iâd read since Iâd been to the farm.
My uncle had bred all these animals and all the ones that the farm sold, as well as animals for other farmers and businesses that needed them. He had also bred Violet, which he wanted her existence kept a secret until he could figure out how he did it.
My mind kept returning to the same image when I thought about the secrets my uncle had, and that was the drawing of the board Iâd found in the capsule room. I realized that I never asked if his breeding practices for the more typical animals, like the llamas and cows, were a secret, or if they were well-known techniques. It felt like everything he did was a secret the way he had the journals, the hidden room, and the shadow box with the false-back.
There were a lot of questions left to find an answer to, and I decided right then and there that I was going to find them.
For the rest of the walk, I went over what I remembered of the breeding processes Iâd read about. A lot of the time involved seemed to depend on what was being bred. Some of the more basic animals only took a few hours. Some bigger animals, like horses and llamas, took a few days.
